Labor Day weekend is two days away, and Breckenridge is about to do the thing it does every year around this time: throw one last big, loud weekend, then quietly change gears. If you're here for it — or wondering what's still open once the crowds clear out — here's what to know.

The town's official send-off is this weekend: the Gathering at the Great Divide Art Festival returns to Colorado Mountain College for its 51st year, Beaver Run closes out its Summerfest season with a free Labor Day Music Festival on Friday, and Sunday, September 6 quietly wraps up the season for the Sunday Market at Main Street Station — worth one more stop if you haven't been.

Here's the detail that catches people off guard: Epic Discovery — the ropes courses, alpine slide, and gondola-served hiking on Peak 8 — closes for the season on Labor Day itself, September 7. The gondola then stays closed until the mountain reopens for ski season in November. If you've been meaning to ride it, this weekend is the last call.

Not everything winds down, though. The trailheads stay open well into fall — Spruce Creek to the Mohawk Lakes and Quandary Peak among them — and Main Street's restaurants and shops settle into a quieter, more local rhythm that a lot of people, myself included, genuinely prefer to the July crowds.
