Exploring the mountains when they're not covered in snow is one of the true joys of living in Summit County year-round. As the summer sun warms the peaks and valleys, the trails around Breckenridge transform into a hiker’s paradise, offering breathtaking views, fresh alpine air, and a peaceful escape into nature. While there’s always a chance the skies could open up and surprise us with an early snowfall, I’m choosing to be optimistic that summer isn't quite over yet. So, let’s lace up our boots and dive into some of the best day hikes Breckenridge has to offer before the snow starts to fall.
Difficulty: Hard
If hiking a 14er is on your summer bucket list, look no further than Quandary Peak Trail. This 6.7 mile out-and-back route is located in White River National Forest and makes for one of the most beautiful (and challenging) day hikes in Breckenridge. Dogs are allowed but they must be kept on a leash. Tip: the East Ridge route gets really crowded on summer weekends, so consider trekking on a weekday.
Difficulty: Moderate
Like most day hikes in Breckenridge, this 6-mile loop in Arapaho National Forest boasts spectacular views. It’s a moderate 2.5 mile hike uphill to Continental Falls, but seeing the water crash through cracks in the sides of the mountain makes it completely worth it.
Difficulty: Easy
For those days when you want to be outside but aren’t looking for an intense workout, Boreas Pass fits the bill perfectly. The trail is nearly 20 miles end to end but you can turn around at any point and head back. Expect to encounter gorgeous wildflowers, dogs, trail runners, and a great view of the Breckenridge Ski Area.
Difficulty: Easy
Hiking with kids? The short distance and gentle elevation gain make Sawmill Creek Trail suitable for all ability levels, including small children. The trail itself is shaded by soaring pine trees, which offer protection from the sun on particularly warm days. Pack a picnic lunch and post up at Sawmill Reservoir to complete your afternoon adventure.
There are so many great day hikes in Breckenridge; it was tricky to narrow it down to just a few. Which trails are on your must-hike list this summer?
