6 Fun Winter Activities in Breckenridge

I might be a little bit biased, but I’m pretty sure there’s no better place to spend winter than Breckenridge. If you’re going to be cold, you may as well be cold in the most idyllic setting imaginable! This time of year, you can find me skiing the powdery slopes of Peak 8, taking a sleigh ride through White River National Forest, or cozying up in a coffee shop with a good book. I don’t even mind when a blizzard hits; you really can’t beat the views of Breckenridge blanketed in white, fluffy snow.

Whether you recently decided to buy a luxury home in Summit County or you’ve been a local for years, there are so many fun winter activities in Breckenridge worth penciling into your calendar. From sledding at Carter Park, to riding the free BreckConnect Gondola, to ice skating under the stars, I’ve rounded up a few activities and events I’ve really been enjoying this season. Bonus: they’re all family friendly, so pack the kiddos in the car along with your gear!

6 Fun Winter Activities in Breckenridge

1. Ride the BreckConnect Gondola

Take in a bird’s eye view of Breckenridge on the BreckConnect Gondola. The 10-minute ride offers a stunning view of Cucumber Gulch, where you might spot a moose if you’re lucky. Fun fact: the BreckConnect can transport 3,000 people per hour from town to the base of peak 8! Riding the gondola is completely free for Breckenridge locals and visitors, but be sure to dress warmly – the cabins aren’t heated.

2. Go Ice Skating Outdoors

We all know the indoor Stephen C. West Ice Arena is open all year round. But Breckenridge locals and visitors get a special treat once the temperature dips. In winter, you can go ice skating outdoors most days of the week in the afternoon or evening. Check the ice arena schedule to start planning an affordable, family-friendly skating date.

At the base of Peak 8 is an outdoor ice skating rink with a rink side fire pit that offers stunning views of Baldy Mountain just below the gondola swaying to and fro. Rent skates next to the rink and warm up with a mug of hot cocoa afterwards at the ULLR Cafe.

3. Go Dog Sledding

Embark on a guided dog sled adventure through the White River National Forest. Sit back and be pulled by a team of Siberian Huskies across the snow through a winter wonderland. Each dog sled tour comes with the opportunity to meet and greet the pups – the perfect photo op!

4. Ride the Main Street Trolley

Strolling along Main Street in Breckenridge is a scene straight out of a storybook this time of year. The only thing better than walking is hitching a ride on the free Main Street trolley! The trolley stops in several places, making it easy jump off to grab dessert at Crepes A La Cart. Hitching a ride on the trolley is a great way to show out-of-town visitors the splendor of downtown Breckenridge while saving your legs for skiing and snowboarding.

5. Go Sledding at Carter Park

Sledding is one of those classic winter activities in Breckenridge that never gets old. Located just a few blocks off Main Street, Carter Park is Breck’s main sledding hill, so it tends to get crowded. If you have young children, you may want to go during off-peak hours for the best chance at a stress-free ride. BYOS (bring your own sled) and consider a helmet for safety.

6. Horse Sleigh Ride Through Winter Wonderland

As if Breckenridge isn’t magical enough, experience the snow-covered pines equestrian-style. Golden Horseshoe Sleigh Rides offers private rides if you’re looking for a date with that special someone and public tours complete with dinner and a show at a mining camp right out of 1862. Cozy up under shared blankets and remember to bring mittens, a beanie and hand warmers – just in case!
