For years, Summit County has continued to hold a spot on the list of the most active counties in the entire nation. Many of our neighbors consider themselves physically active, and local residents say they live close to a location that allows them to get moving – an ideal place to be!
When you consider just how many ways there are to stay active in Summit County, taking top honors doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Locals know that Breck’s outdoor activity scene is unparalleled. But if you’re new here - allow me to fill you in on all of the fantastic things to do in the area.
If you recently decided to buy a luxury home in Summit County and haven’t checked out Lake Dillon yet, go this weekend! Lake Dillon is the epicenter of summer fun on the water for Breckenridge and the surrounding area. There are seemingly endless opportunities for boating, tubing, kayaking, fishing, and splashing around.
If you’re not quite ready to tackle a fourteener, Summit County offers the chance to build your strength and confidence on the largest outdoor rock climbing wall in Colorado. Not a skilled climber? Don’t stress. There are routes available for all skill levels. The wall is located in the west Copper Mountain resort area – you can’t miss it!
Head south on Highway 9 and you’ll run right into Frisco Adventure Park. The entire family will find something they enjoy here, with miles of hiking and biking trails, lakeside camping, a free skate park, and a disc golf course. Frisco Adventure Park also has athletic camps for kids throughout the summer.
What the heck is a fourteener? Glad you asked! A fourteener is a 14,000-foot mountain, and Colorado is home to 54 of them. Quandary Peak is a great first fourteener, as it’s a relatively short hike and has less elevation gain compared to many other fourteeners. It’s located right here in Breckenridge!
Whitewater rafting is a perfect way to get your fill of thrills and scenery simultaneously. Once the snow melts, the rivers in the area fill up with fresh water and beckon residents to conquer the rapids. Raft trips are categorized by difficulty ratings, and many don’t require experience.
Of course, these outings just scratch the surface of ways to stay active in Summit County. That’s one of the things we love most about living here. From skiing and snowboarding in the winter to hiking, biking, climbing and rafting in the summer, there are endless ways to exercise and enjoy the outdoors every single day. Not many counties in the United States can say that. Pretty special, huh?
