5 Free Things to Do in Breckenridge before Summer Ends

Are you feeling strapped for cash this summer? While we typically prepare ourselves for a deficit in our bank accounts over the holidays, summer often ends up being more expensive than we anticipate. What gives?

Let’s be honest. Summer is prime time for spending money. Taking weekend road trips, hosting backyard BBQs and spending countless hours grazing on appetizers at your favorite Breckenridge eatery can make a real dent in your wallet. Of course, you need an entirely new wardrobe to look fabulous doing said activities. It’s no wonder there isn’t much cash leftover for things like – groceries. And gas. You know, the essentials.

Luckily, you don’t have to get a part-time job to enjoy the very best of what Breckenridge has to offer. That’s right, there’s plenty of free stuff to do that won’t bust your budget right here in Summit County. Here’s a quick look at your options for fun ways to spend your weekend – no debit card required.

Go on a hike

This one is kind of obvious, but it’s worth mentioning. We’re lucky to live in a place where we can climb mountains with gorgeous views right in our backyards. Best of all, there’s something for everyone at every skill level. Whether you’re looking for a long, strenuous hike or a short one you can do on your lunch break, Breckenridge has it. So get out there and start exploring!

Splash around in the river

The Blue River runs straight down the middle of Breckenridge. Not only is it pretty to look at, it’s really fun to splash around in, too. Leash up your dog, grab your kids and head downtown to wade in the water and climb on the rocky riverbank. If you feel like “splurging,” we recommend getting some blueberry brownie ice cream at nearby Clint’s Bakery & Coffee to enjoy as you relax by the river.

Catch a free concert

Yeah, they may not be artists you’ve heard of. However, going to a free concert at the Riverwalk Center is a great way to experience new genres of music without spending loads of cash on an expensive ticket. If all else fails, you’ll enjoy yourself on the lawn soaking up the sun, doing cartwheels, chatting with friends or sipping a drink from the outside cash bar. Now that’s what we call summer.

Take a ride on the gondola

Whether you’ve just moved to Breckenridge or are a longtime resident, riding the gondola up to Peak 8 is a really cool way to see the town from a different perspective. Best of all, it’s totally free! You might even spot some wildlife along the way or find a patch of snow at the top. A snowball fight in the middle of summer sounds pretty cool to us. Can you say, awesome first date idea?

Find your way to the Fairy Forest

Located along the hiking path off the Four O’clock Trail, you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled for a small sign welcoming you to the “Fairy Forest.” Locals have been decorating the forest for years, and along the way you’ll see fairy tale artifacts, tiny fairy houses, fairy gardens, tunnels and bridges. It’s a really neat detour and a wonderful way to keep kids engaged on your outdoor adventure.
